Yellow Cupcakes with Milk Chocolate Frosting - Boston Chic PartyButtery yellow cupcakes topped with rich and fudgy milk chocolate frosting make a delicious, but classic dessert that’s much better homemade than from the box.

This past weekend was MJD’s birthday. We had a super fun weekend celebrating with friends and family. Saturday called for brunch with family followed by some friendly bowling competitions and a fun dinner with friends. On his actual birthday, Sunday, we spent most of the day watching the new season of House of Cards and spent the night having a delicious dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Coppa.

For as long as we’ve been dating, I’ve always helped MJD celebrate his┬ábirthday by making his favorite cupcake- yellow cupcakes with chocolate frosting. Over the past few years, I’ve definitely had time to perfect my recipe of this classic birthday treat. My Yellow Cupcakes are light and buttery. My Milk Chocolate Frosting is decadent and fudge-like, making it the perfect topping for these cupcakes. Sure, you can make yellow cupcakes from a box, but why would you want to when the homemade version is so much better? Just one bite of my Yellow Cupcakes With Milk Chocolate Frosting and I’m sure you’ll agree that they are much better than the box!

Does anyone in your family or one of your friends have a dessert that they always eat on their birthday? I’d love to hear about your birthday traditions and favorite sweets!

xoxo, Jenna

You’ll Need:

Recipe makes one dozen cupcakes

Cupcakes:

  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2/3 of a cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 of a cup unsalted butter (1 and a 1/2 sticks), melted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 and a 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and a 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 of a teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 of a cup whole milk

Milk Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1/4 of a cup unsalted butter (1/2 of a stick), melted
  • 1/2 of a cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 and a 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar

To Make:

Pre-heat oven to 350 Degrees F. Prepare a cupcake pan by lining with paper liners or spraying with non-stick spray.

Using a hand or stand mixer, mix eggs and granulated sugar until foamy (approximately two minutes).

Once foamy, gradually pour in the melted butter and vanilla. Mix to combine.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.

With the mixer on low speed, add half of the flour mixture to the eggs, butter and sugar.

Mix in milk until combined.

Add in remaining flour until combined, taking care not to over-mix.

Fill each cupcake tin 2/3 of the way with batter (approximately 1/3 of a cup of batter).

Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until a toothpick placed in center of cupcake comes out clean.

Allow cupcakes to cool in pan for about ten minutes, before moving to cooling rack to completely cool.

To make frosting, combine melted butter with cocoa powder with a stand or hand mixer.

Next, Add milk and vanilla and beat until smooth and combined.

Gradually add in sugar until reached consistency and taste.

Frost cupcakes using your favorite technique.

Add birthday candles, birthday singing and dig in!
