A few weekends ago MJD and I were looking for something different to do as part of our date night. Seeing a show at Improv Asylum had been on my list of things to do in Boston, but we hadn’t had the chance yet. Going to Improv Asylum’s Afternoon Delight show was the perfect “something new” to do for a date and one of the funniest dates we have ever had!
Improv Asylum is located in Boston’s North End directly on Hanover Street. Improv Asylum is a comedy theater with shows that are full of improvisation, hence the name ;). There are many different shows on schedule at Improv. Some have a theme to them, such as the “All The Ladies” show which pretty much screams bachelorette party or The Show Against Humanity based on the popular Cards Against Humanity game. Others, like the Afternoon Delight show we saw, are improv-based and rely on the audience for participation.
Improv Asylum’s theater is located on the basement level. When you first walk down the stairs, you enter in to a big room which is an open space with a bar- the perfect spot for a pre-show cocktail. You can of course bring drinks into the show and I’m pretty sure that makes it way more fun! For the Afternoon Delight show, the theater was set up with rows of chairs on all four sides of a square center stage area. I can’t confirm if this is how it is for all shows, but for the show we went to this made sure everyone has pretty much the same views.
As the name suggests, the Afternoon Delight show takes place on Saturday afternoons at 4 PM. The show is one and a half hours long, with a short intermission (to refill drinks obviously!). The content for the show is all improvisation- either based off of audience response to a question the comedians might ask or on a few special volunteers in the audience. At the show we went to a few people celebrating their birthday were asked some questions and then they made a sketch based on their answers. The ticket prices for the show are reasonable at $20 per ticket, which when I think about movie ticket prices in the city, I feel like the price is well worth it for tickets to a show. Tickets to the show also gave free admission into the midnight show based on availability.
Afternoon Delight was a really fun way to spend a few hours in the afternoon! It’s perfect for anyone who likes to laugh. It made for a great and unique date. It’d also would be so much fun with a group of friends or as a fun thing to do with guests visiting from out of town. Just be ready to laugh :)!

The Improv Asylum certainly makes for a great outing! People can enjoy a nice meal in the North End before heading to the show. The Afternoon Delight show is at a convenient time, as well.
