Having grown up visiting Martha’s Vineyard and now vacationing there with my own family, it makes me so happy to introduce Nicholas to some of my childhood vacation traditions. From carousel rides to petting cows at the farm, I love reliving my own memories with him! If you are looking for some place to take a break from the beautiful beaches with your little one, give one of the below suggestions a try!
Ride the Flying Horses Carousel– The Flying Horses is the oldest carousel in the United States and it’s definitely an island must! Your little ones will love riding on this old school carousel while competing for the brass ring which gives the winner a free ride.
Visit the Edgartown Fire Musuem– Located right outside of downtown Edgartown, the fire museum is home to antique fire trucks and an awesome place to take your truck obsessed! It’s directly behind the fire station and I’ve heard the fire house dog is frequently there but unfortunately did not see him ourselves. The museum is small so is more of a quick activity but great to take a break from beach time.
Watch the planes at the Katama Airfield– If your little one loves planes as much as mine does, this will be a definite hit! If it is your first visit to the island and you’ve been wondering where the bi-planes flying over South Beach are coming from, this is the answer! Home to personal planes as well as the sightseeing bi-planes, it’s a great spot to kill some time with the kiddos. If you get hungry or are looking for a kid friendly place to eat, Right Fork Dinner at the airfield is the perfect spot for it and also has outdoor games like cornhole and jenga to keep things entertaining!
Pet the alpacas at Island Alpaca– One for the animal lovers! Island Alpaca is an alpaca farm in Oak Bluffs. For just $5 per person you can visit the farm and pet the alpaca. You can even buy your own alpaca at the farm too! We haven’t had the chance to visit Island Alpaca yet, but have heard so many great things so it is for sure on our list for next summer!
Check out the animals at The Farm Institute– Located in Katama, The Farm Institute is home to all the animals and a perfect place to entertain your animal loving little one. Cows, goats, pigs, ducks- they will have a blast seeing them all up close and personal. I also loved visiting and checking out their beautiful gardens and planning to go for one of the hikes on their property the next time we visit.
Have you been to the Vineyard with kids? Any other activities you’d add to this list?
xoxo, Jenna
