Doughnuts are definitely part of my love language. For the past few years, M and I have made dougnuts- specifically Blackbird Dougnhnuts- one of our go-to treats for Valentine’s Day, birthday or just because. I basically dream and drool about their Salted Toffee doughnut every day 😉
This Valentine’s Day we’ll be living just a bit too far to pop in for a few treats that morning so I thought I’d try my hand at making my own doughnuts. With MJD being the chocolate lover that he is a chocolate doughnut with chocolate glaze seemed appropriate. To make it a bit more Valentine’s festive though I added sliced strawberry for a chocolate covered strawberry effect. I love strawberries so this got a big thumbs up for me. If you aren’t a strawberry fan, try making the doughnuts and sprinkling on some festive sprinkles to make them holiday appropriate- easy!
My Chocolate Covered Strawberry Doughnuts are a baked doughnut, making them cake like. While they are best eaten the same morning they are made, they will keep for a few days in an air tight container. If you are adding the strawberries however, I would not add them until right before serving if you are serving more than a few hours after you make. If your little ones are into baking, this would be a really fun recipe to do together because it is not too long or involved so they could reap the benefits of their work pretty quickly!
Now your turn- What food or sweet treat is part of your love language?
xoxo, Jenna
You’ll Need:
Makes six large doughnuts or twelve mini doughnuts- depending on your doughnut pan size
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 of a cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 of a teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 of a cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the glaze:
- 1 cup confectioner’s sugar
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 of a teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3-4 tablespoons of milk as needed to reach desired consistency
- Sliced strawberries to garnisht
To Make:
Preheat your oven to 350 Degrees F and prepare your doughnut pan by spraying with a non-stick spray.
In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients- flour, cocoa powder and baking soda.
In a separate bowl, cream together the milk, granulated sugar, egg, melted butter and vanilla extract until well combined.
Combine the wet ingredients with dry and mix.
Using a tablespoon or other small scoop, spoon the batter into the doughnut pan. Only fill each of the doughnut pan openings about 2/3 of the way as they can overflow and bake over if too much batter is inside.
Bake for 8-9 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the doughnuts comes out clean.
Remove from oven to cool in pan.
After cooling in pan, move doughnuts to a wire cookie rack to continue cooling,
While cooling, create your glaze by mixing together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla and three tablespoons of milk.
If the glaze is too thick for your liking, add additional milk slowly until it reaches desired consistency.
Dip the top of your doughnuts into the glaze evenly and place back on wire rack to cool and allow glaze to set.
Top with sliced strawberries before serving and enjoy your doughnuts made with LOVE 🙂
